The Teoria ear training app is the app that I use for myself as well as with my private students.
Lesson 3 of the Modern Guitar Harmony Ear Training 101 course recommends the Teoria ear training app so here is a quick how to use it guide.
Lesson 3 is about identifying whether an interval is a perfect fourth or a perfect fifth.
In this guide you will learn how to set up the fun test for identifying ascending perfect fourths and fifths. Once you are comfortable with the ascending intervals you can start practising the descending intervals, followed by mixed ascending and descending intervals.
Step 1
Go to the Teoria.com homepage.
Step 2
Click on the Music Theory & Ear Training Exercises link as shown above
Step 3
Go to Ear Training > Intervals > Interval Ear Training
Step 4
You should see all the intervals listed. Ensure that only the P4 and P5 intervals are green.
Click on the intervals to make them green or white.
Set the settings as follows;
Tempo = 55
Treble Clef (the clef on the left)
Direction: Ascending
Type: Melodic
Answer Using: Interval
Click OK.
Step 5
After clicking OK you will be taken to a new page where a perfect fourth or perfect fifth will be played.
If you want to listen to the interval again press the speaker icon. Do this until you think that you can recognise if the interval is a perfect fourth or perfect fifth.
Each interval has its own characteristic sound. Try to listen for it but in a relaxed way.
Once you think that you know the answer press the P4 or P5 button underneath the stave.
Teoria will then tell you if you were correct or incorrect.
The great thing about Teoria is that if you get the interval wrong it plays the incorrect interval followed by the correct interval. This is important. Click the speaker icon as often as you have to in order to get the sounds ingrained in your inner ear. This is where the learning takes place.
To continue to the next exercise simply press Next Exercise.
Do this most days. Treat is like a video game, you have to get to the next level.
The optimum score is 100% after 3-5 minutes.
Once you know the sound of the interval you know the sound of the interval!
